Find what percentage one value represents of a total
The formula
Percentage = (Y / X) × 100. If you scored 42 out of 50, that's 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. If 28 of 350 visitors converted, that's 28 ÷ 350 × 100 = 8%.
Worked examples
- Test scores: 17 out of 20 → 85%
- Survey responses: 156 of 500 → 31.2%
- Budget share: $450 of $3,000 → 15%
- Conversion rate: 28 of 1,000 → 2.8%
Building a pie chart from these
Once you have all your percentages, drop them straight into the maker as values. The chart treats each entry as a slice proportional to its value, so percentages and raw counts both work. For pie charts, use either consistently — don't mix percentages and raw values across slices in the same chart.
Y is —% of X
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. So 42 out of 150 = 42 ÷ 150 × 100 = 28%.
What if Y is bigger than X?
The result will be over 100%. That's mathematically valid ("150 is 150% of 100") but unusual in pie chart contexts, where parts should be less than the whole.
Can I use this for pie chart prep?
Yes — convert each of your raw values into a percentage of the total. Then the maker can plot them directly.
